Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks', commonly known as Big Bluestem, is a striking selection of a native prairie grass prized for its dramatic foliage color. The upright blades emerge gray-green in spring and deepen through summer to rich purple, becoming nearly black by late summer and fall. In late summer it sends up tall stems topped with distinctive three-parted seed heads that resemble a turkey's foot. This warm-season grass forms a sturdy, upright clump that stands well through winter, adding structure and movement to the landscape. It is tough and drought tolerant once established, thriving in poor to average soils, and provides cover and seed for birds. Plant it in full sun in meadows, prairie gardens, borders or as a bold vertical accent.
