Aralia cordata 'Sun King', commonly known as Japanese Spikenard, is a bold herbaceous perennial with large, compound leaves in brilliant golden yellow. It forms a lush, shrub-like clump that lights up shady beds and pairs beautifully with hostas, ferns and dark-leaved plants. In late summer, spikes of small white flowers appear and are visited by bees and other pollinators, followed by dark purple-black berries. The plant dies back to the ground each winter and returns vigorously in spring. For the best foliage color without scorch, plant it in part shade with some morning sun and moist, rich soil.
