Carex woodii, commonly known as Pretty Sedge, is a native woodland sedge with soft, fine-textured green foliage that often shows a reddish-purple tint at the base. It spreads slowly by rhizomes to form a loose, low carpet, making it an excellent groundcover or lawn alternative in shady areas. Early in spring it produces small, understated flower spikes before the foliage fills in. Pretty Sedge is low maintenance, deer resistant and adaptable to a range of soils. Plant it in part shade to full shade with average to moist, well-drained soil beneath trees, in woodland gardens or among spring ephemerals.
