Commelina virginica, commonly known as Virginia Dayflower, is a native perennial found in moist woodlands, stream banks and wet meadows across the Southeast. It bears small clusters of bright blue flowers from summer into fall, with each bloom opening for a single day and new ones following steadily. The flowers emerge from folded, boat-shaped bracts on stems lined with lance-shaped leaves. This dayflower spreads by rhizomes to form loose colonies, making it useful for covering ground in damp, shady areas. Plant it in part shade with moist to wet soil in rain gardens, along ponds and streams, or in naturalized woodland plantings.
