Dianthus barbatus 'Rockin Red', commonly known as Sweet William, is an upright, long-blooming perennial that carries clusters of lacy, bright red flowers on sturdy stems from late spring into late summer, often continuing into fall. The lightly scented blooms rise above tidy clumps of evergreen foliage and draw in butterflies and hummingbirds. Taller than most dianthus, the Rockin' series was bred for heavy, repeat flowering and makes an excellent cut flower, and deer tend to leave it alone. Grow it in full sun with moist, well-drained soil in borders, cottage gardens, pollinator plantings and containers, and deadhead spent clusters to keep new flowers coming.
