Sarracenia x, commonly known as Pitcher Plant, is a hybrid carnivorous perennial with tall, tubular leaves that lure, trap and digest insects. The colorful pitchers are often veined or speckled and make a fascinating, sculptural display from spring into fall. In spring, unusual nodding flowers rise on separate stems above the foliage. Pitcher plants have very specific needs: full sun, constantly wet, acidic, nutrient-poor soil such as peat and sand, and rainwater or distilled water rather than tap water. Never fertilize them, as they get their nutrients from the insects they catch. They require a cool winter dormancy and are well suited to bog gardens or containers kept standing in water.
